Have you ever been curious about trying something different as a career… but you just weren’t sure how to start… or if you even should?

That’s where Lise Cartwright found herself a few years ago.

She was in a job that wasn’t fulfilling.  A little part of her was dying every day.  She knew there had to be better for her.  BUT… she wasn’t in a place where she could just quit and start all over.

Instead, she launched a side hustle.

That is… she started to experiment with different kinds of work on her own time.

Writing.

Organizing.

Planning.

All the stuff she loved.

But now she was doing it for other people.  And she was getting paid.

Things started to take off and she quit her “bad fit” job.  Now, she’s doing work that she enjoys… while getting paid well to do it.  It’s not easy… but it sure is satisfying.

I love Lise’s story.  How about you?  What’s something that stood out to you from the ideas that Lise shared?

I’d love to hear from YOU!  Leave a comment and let me know.

The Side Hustle
Queen of the side hustle, Lise Cartwright from Auckland, New Zealand, teaches others how to create this in their own lives because she successfully did it in her own. She defines the side hustle as “something you can do in your spare time, which is neither time nor financially intensive.” Most of Cartwright’s prior business life was spent in jobs where she worked in administrative based roles. “I sat in front of a computer, year in and year out.” About every three years she would change jobs, hoping to find something more challenging and fulfilling, but that never happened. The definitive moment for her was when working for a non-profit, she had a heart to heart with her manager, confiding that she was not happy in her work and wanted advice regarding advancement opportunities. “She basically told me there was nowhere for me to go.” This time Cartwright knew that changing jobs was not the answer and that she had to get serious and create change.

You Don’t Need to Be an Expert to Begin
Cartwright still needed an income so she stayed with her job. Considering her options for a sideline business, she realized that writing was something she could do online in her spare time. She had no experience, but she started anyway. Pouring herself into it, she wrote on evenings and weekends and was able to quit her job within two months. She quickly learned that you do not need to be an expert on anything to be an authority. All you need to know is a little bit more than someone else, making you a relative expert. If this sounds like a bit of a stretch, keep in mind that Cartwright has an amazing twenty-four Amazon bestsellers to her credit.

One of these is a little book titled No Gym Needed, a book about how to do a workout at home in thirty minutes with no equipment and still get results. Cartwright is not a personal trainer, nor is she a bodybuilder. She is simply a woman who created her own at-home, no-equipment-needed workout, and shared it in a book. After the book was released, she woke up one morning and checked her stats to find that 200 copies had been sold overnight in the Middle East. Making money while you sleep is always a good plan.

The Need for Business Behind the Art
Increasingly, artists and artisans are marketing their work online, expanding their customer base beyond their community. One talented illustrator with a website about positive imagery approached Cartwright for help with marketing. She suggested diversifying, perhaps creating a line of illustrated gift cards as well as adult coloring books to add to her product line and to list them on Etsy. She further suggested doing keyword research and then optimizing product titles and descriptions to match those words so clients would have an easier time reaching her website. “Let’s find out what your customers are looking for,” says Cartwright. Then you can help them find it.

Some artists feel that making a business plan somehow tarnishes their art. Not so, says Cartwright. Even as artists, the business side of things needs attention because it is that which allows you to continue to do your art. It is what gets your product into customers’ hands.
