Dream BIG-Achieve More: What to do when someone says no.

By now, you know that I love to ask questions that help people to dream bigger and achieve more.

Recently, I was talking with a sales person who had some big dreams that she wanted to go after, but in order to do that… she had to achieve more in her sales position.  She also explained that she was great at making connections with people but she had trouble gaining commitment on the spot. She felt really good about her product and had no trouble being enthusiastic about it, but she was starting to feel stuck.

Dreaming BIG and achieving more with Mitch Matthews

So I told her a little story and asked her a few questions that really seemed to help.

Here’s the story… and here are the questions…

Have you ever struggled with the question: What are some of my big dreams?

Over the years of doing the BIG Dream Gatherings… this is one of the big questions that people bring to me.

They say something like… “It’s been so long since I’ve thought about my big dreams.  I just can’t remember any of them.  What do I do?”

Well… I got to post on www.BESTLIFEDESIGN.com today… on that very subject.

Click here to find out what I learned from a tree in our front yard.

It will offer you a simple and fun three-step solution so you can answer that question.

And more importantly… start to go after some of those BIG dreams!

Hey gang…

Here’s the update for the week…

BIG Dream Gathering Update:

Friend and BIG Dream Gathering Alumni Kevin Hansen is set to make his debut on the Dr. Phil Show on Friday, April 1.  You’re invited to watch the show with Kevin! Just click here to find out more! We’re VERY proud and excited for Kevin… He’s livin’ out one of his BIG dreams!

Question: what’s happening with some of your big dreams? Shoot me an update and let me know at contactus@mitchmatthews.com!

Dreaming BIG with your Kids:

We went car shopping with our sons this past weekend.  Yeah… it was a good mix of fun, dreaming BIG and sowing in.  Our oldest found a fav and it lead to some awesome discussions on what it would take to work for… and… save up for something like that!  And yeah… he’s got good taste!

We also talked a little bit about how it’s important to keep material things in perspective… but how when you do… they sure can be a whole lot of fun!

Question: What are some of the things that you do to inspire BIG dreams in your kids?

MY UPCOMING BOOK:

I’m flippin’ excited to say that the final proof for my upcoming book got shipped on Saturday… so we’re close!

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been working with the freakishly cool Jocelyn Wallace to create a book called: “IGNITE! A small book to spark your BIG dreams.” She’s taken my writing and truly made the book an experience!  Plus, she’s incorporated some of Melissa’s (my wife) artwork into the cover art.

I’ll keep you in the loop but I can’t wait for you all to see it!

SUGGESTED BLOG OF THE WEEK

If you haven’t already gotten to know Ben Arment… do.  Here’s his blog: History in the Making. He’s doing some freakishly cool stuff and he’s helping people to dream big in a whole new way.  I dig it.  I think you will too.

By the way, Justin Wise pointed me in Ben’s direction last year and I’ve been following him ever since.

THAT DREAM BIG GUY

So I was speaking at a conference at the University of Iowa recently and after the talk, I was asked to participate in some meetings at the career center across the street.  When I walked in… one of the freakishly cool people that worked there shouted out, “Hey, there’s that dream big guy!”  I honestly looked behind me for a second before I realized she was talking about me.

I have to admit that I’ve been called a number of things over my lifetime, but that one… I really liked.  So I bought “ThatdreamBIGguy.com.”  I’m not sure how I’ll use it yet, but it makes me smile!  Weigh in if you think I should run with it!

That’s it for now.

Keep dreaming BIG and taking action this week!

Signed…

Are your goals for 2011 compelling?

Goal Setting

As we are wrapping up 2010, a lot of us are wanting to write down our goals for 2011.

Right?

How about you?

Are you inspired to sit for 30 minutes… or for a full day… with the intention of writing down your list of things you want to accomplish in this next year?

I know I am.

But as I started to do this for myself this year, I was struck with a question.

That question was… “How do I make my list of goals… compelling?”

That may seem like a silly question for some of you.

You might be saying, “We’re talking about our BIG goals and dreams… how can they NOT be compelling?”

And maybe yours already are.

But as I work with groups and as I coach people one-on-one… and even admittedly… when I list out my own goals… the first draft doesn’t tend to be that compelling.

And if the goals aren’t compelling… then they don’t tend to be the kind of thing that inspires us to new levels of achievement, creativity and freaky-cool breakthrough.

Right?

I mean, if our goals aren’t compelling then our list tends to go back in our journal or it gets stuck in a pile… only to be found in December of next year. And sadly, our year-end goal setting session is just wasted time.

LESS THAN COMPELLING

Let me give you some examples of solid goals that fall short of being compelling…

Maybe you’re in sales, and you write down, “This year, I want to finish at 110% of my goal.”

That’s good.  It’s clear.  It’s concise.  But it’s not compelling.

Or how about for the person that is the tech-freelancer.  You might write down a goal of “This year, I want to create a plugin for WordPress that 1,000 people download.”

Again… good.  It’s big.  It’s cool.  But is it compelling?  Hmmmm.

How about for my friends that are in pharmaceutical sales.  These people are some of my favorites because I was in this world for over 10 years.  If this is your gig, nothing feels like it’s in your control right now.  And you might be saying, “I want to hit 100% by the end of the year and I want to hit my top 20 targets each week.”

Good.  It’s somewhat within your control.  But it’s not compelling.

How about this?

Let’s put a compelling twist on it.

Let’s think about the people who might be impacted by our goals for 2011.  And… let’s think about the way we want to get there.

Maybe… if your the sales person, you could say that “I want to finish the year at 110% of goal and I want to find some new customers that are in desperate need of my/our solutions/products/services so I can bless their socks off as I serve them.”

This compelling goal might help you to look for new customers who NEED you!

Or for the tech genius… how about “I want to create a WordPress plugin that 1,000 people will download in 2011.  And one of the ways that I’m going to get there is to learn one new thing (big or small) that’s freaking cool EVERY day.”

This compelling goal might help you to be more creative and find new ways to do the magic that you do!

Or for my friends in the pharma world… what if your battle cry became, “I’m going to finish out this next year at over 100% and one of the ways that I’m going to get there is that I’m going to help 3 nurses in desperate need of a smile… to smile… daily.”

There are a lot of things that are outside of your control right now, but this is one thing that can be within your control, and it might even help you to remember that we’re all in this together… even on the days where that’s not so obvious.

Yeah… clear… concise… AND… compelling.

So to wrap this up, here are 3 ways to make your list of goals for 2011 more compelling

  • Think of the people that you could impact and link your goal to their experience
  • Think of fun and engaging steps that can help you to get to your goal
  • Think of things that are within your control and link your goal to them

That’s it!

How about it?

Can you think of other ways to make your goals and dreams more compelling? Click on comments and join in the discussion!

And stay tuned… I’m going to post a few of my own goals and dreams for 2011 in the days to come.  Partly, because I want to show that I’m walking the walk… and partly because I want to ask for your help in achieving them!

Thanks and keep dreaming BIG!

Mitch

The Thank You Project!

Hey gang -

I have the honor of being the keynote speaker at the Excellence in Education event on November 18.  It’s a celebration sponsored by the Iowa State Education Association to honor teachers who have done amazing things for their students and their schools.

The overarching goal: To say THANK YOU to some amazing teachers and honor them for their efforts!

So… I’m excited.

As I was thinking about the event… I got an idea.

What if we all had the chance to say THANK YOU to that special teacher that really made an impact in OUR lives?

What if you had the chance to say thank you to that teacher who invested in you…  that really saw you…  that really encouraged you… that really pushed you?

What if?

So… here’s what we’re going to do.

I’m going to make this a fill in the blank question.  I’m going to post it here and on Facebook.

You can respond to it by clicking comments.

Let’s just see how many teachers we can thank.

Then… I may just read some of them as I’m speaking to the group on the 18th.

Granted… your favorite teacher might not be in the audience… but we’ll try to honor as many favorites as we can!  Plus, I’m guessing that by hearing about some of the other teachers who have made an impact on people’s lives… it will inspire these incredible teachers to continue to do the amazing jobs that they are doing!

Who’s with me?

Okay… so here we go.

Fill in the blanks…

Dear Mr./Mrs./Miss _____________, thank you for _____________________.  I’ll never forget it!

I know that many of my teachers played a HUGE role in helping me to think and dream bigger… and for that… I’m wildly grateful!

I’m betting you feel the same way about some of YOUR teachers!

So… let’s take a second and say thank you.  It will be fun to see where this goes!

Keep dreaming BIG!

Are you headed out to sea?

Brighton - sail boat

A friend… (Thanks Chris Batz!) hit me with the a quote that’s a great thought for the day.

A ship is safest at port, but that’s not what it is created for.” -GM Hopper

So… what’s one small but significant thing you can do today… to start to move from the harbor and to head out to sea?

What’s one thing you could today to start doing more of what you were created for?
