Intellectual Immune System featured!

I was excited to see the newest edition of the ITA Group’s most recent “DRIVEN” magazine.

DRIVEN is an amazing quarterly publication… and this latest edition included an article I wrote about the “Intellectual Immune System.”

You can check out the full magazine by clicking here.

The ITA Group is an organization that helps companies to tap into the immense power that comes from fully-engaged employees, motivated sales people and channel partners, and ignited customers.

So it was an honor to get to work with them on this project!

OVERCOMING THE INTELLECTUAL IMMUNE SYSTEM

In the article, I talk about ways that individuals and organizations can overcome the Intellectual Immune System to make for greater impact and longer lasting change.

So… are you needing to implement a new idea?

  • Are you a leader who is trying to bring change to your organization?
  • Are you a manager who is wanting to inspire bigger thinking (and bigger doing) in your team?
  • Are you an individual who knows you need to try something new (a budget… a diet… time management… a new strategy at work) but you’re getting stuck?

This might just help!

Take a lesson from Abraham Lincoln and help someone else to dream big and achieve more!

I came across a quote today that’s attributed to Abraham Lincoln.  I loved it…

Here’s the quote:

“I am a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.” Ab Lincoln

English: Abraham Lincoln and his son Tad looki...

And here’s the question it inspires:

Who are you telling today that you believe in them?  (And how are you doing it?)

Here are a few suggestions to get you thinking:

Idea 1:

Send a friend from high school a message on Facebook to let them know how they helped you “back in the day” and that you still believe in their dreams even though it’s been a while since you talked.  (10 minutes)

Idea 2:

Send a hand written note (gasp!) to a teacher or college professor to let them know how they impacted who you are today. (20 minutes – 10 to write the note and 10 to google their address. :)

Idea 3:

Take a cup of coffee to a friend at work (without them asking) and let them know you wanted to give them a little extra boost today.  (5 to 10 minutes depending on where you find the coffee and how far away your friend is.)

Mitch Matthews and the science of dreaming bigIdea 4:

When you pick up your kid(s) today… don’t head right home (or to practice or whatever).  Go get ice cream cones to grab their attention (yes, BEFORE supper) and then tell them that you really really believe in them.  (Don’t do it while you’re driving.  STOP and tell them.)  I know you don’t feel like you have time for this… but if you take 15 minutes, they may just remember it the rest of their lives!  (15 to 30 minutes)

Idea 5:

Stop by your church and ask for your pastor’s keys (or a community leader, or your kid’s teacher or some other unsung hero). Then take the car and get it washed.  (I know this sounds crazy but it will take you about 30 to 45 minutes if they actually trust you with their keys.)  It will change their week!

Idea 6:

Call the person that comes to mind when you think of the phrase “The best manager I ever had.”  Then let them know that you are more of the person you were meant to be today, because you worked for them.  And/or give them a specific example of a time when they encouraged you.  (20 minutes: 5 minutes to find the number / 15 minutes to make the call.  Only 8 minutes total if you get their voice mail.)

Idea 7:

Before you go to bed tonight… take 7.2 minutes (with the tv, cell phone and/or the ipad off) and talk to your spouse, significant other or best friend.  Let them know one of the favorite things you see in them.  (Big or small)  Let them know that you believe in them.  Just do it and don’t do it to see if they will reciprocate.  Just do it to bless their socks off.  (7.2 minutes)  By the way, this doesn’t have to be eloquent or Brad Pitt smooth either.  They just want to hear from you… in a very raw and real way.

Okay… I only got to 7 ideas in the time that I had to write this.

Help me out.

What are some other ways to spread the love and encouragement in 5, 10, or 30 minutes or less?  Join in the convo by clicking comments and sharing your ideas today.  I’d love to hear them!

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

Mitch

Mitch Matthews and ENGAGE – February 14th!

Hey gang…

I’m speaking at the upcoming REMAX Real Estate Concepts Coaching Series... and you’re invited!

Date:  Tuesday, February 14
Time:  10 to 11 am
Location:  Pappajohn Educational Center
Cost: Free to attend

Here’s the Scoop on The Talk:

ENGAGE: Secrets to loving what you do and doing what you love!

A new challenge is developing.

Although people are choosing to stay in their jobs longer… actual employee engagement is at an all time low!  In fact, a recent Gallup Poll found that 54% of employees across the United States said they were not engaged in their work.  And an additional 17% identified themselves as “knowingly disengaged.”

Do the math… that’s 71% of American workers that are either not engaged or knowingly disengaged!

That’s not a challenge… that’s a PROBLEM!

With “ENGAGE!” I’ll present a FOUR STEP PROCESS that you can utilize to dramatically increase your own level of engagement… as well as help the people around you to do the same!

We will…

  • Uncover one key concept that undermines any new training initiative and help you to overcome it!
  • Offer specific stories and case studies that will inspire you but also give you specific strategies to use immediately!
  • Show how tying an your bigger goals and dreams to your daily work can make a significant impact on your focus, dedication and loyalty!
  • Provide a core concept to help you to “control what you can control” which will make the the difference in your own performance as well as help to overcome the grinding stress that can cause disengagement!

These concepts, strategies and stories will help you to engage at new levels!

Think about it.

What could happen if you were performing with a high level of contribution AND a high level of satisfaction at work?

Come find out… On February 14th!

It’s free and it’s open to public!  Can’t wait to see you there!

Video of Mitch Matthews

So… if you’re checking out this post… there’s a very good chance that I’m going to be coming to speak to your organization soon.  I can’t wait to meet you and connect when I do!

Now, sometimes it helps to get to know each other a little bit.  This allows you to get a feel for what I’m all about.  And one way to do that is to provide some examples of some of the things I’ve gotten to talk about in the past.

Here’s my talk from a recent TEDx event.  It’s all about something I call the Intellectual Immune System.

It’s the thing that keeps us from trying new things! It’s what keeps us from accepting new ideas. It’s what can keep us from doing the things we want to do.  Yeah… It’s that.  And here’s where I explain how to overcome it… in 12 minutes or less.

I hope you enjoy this!

Now, again… I’m looking forward to connecting with you soon.

Don’t forget to come up and introduce yourself when I come to speak to your organization!

I’ll see you then,

Mitch Matthews

The Science of Dreaming BIG: The power of looking forward!

Did you know that you can make yourself feel happier… simply by looking forward to something?

LOOK FORWARD TO SOMETHING

A study published in the American Physiological Society found that participants who simply thought about watching their favorite movie actually raised their endorphin levels by 27 percent.

That’s right.

Happy kid

Image via Wikipedia

Just by telling participants that they were going to be able to watch their favorite movie… their bodies produced endorphins (which are responsible for increasing a sense of joy and euphoria, increasing retention during learning and helping improve decision making) levels at significantly higher levels than the control group.

This research supports the timeless wisdom that suggests that sometimes the most enjoyable part of any activity can be the anticipation of it.

In fact, some research has said that simply scheduling a vacation for next year (even if you can’t afford it right now) can boost your sense of happiness and light the pleasure centers in your brain, almost as much as taking the actual trip will itself.

Okay… so let’s think about how we could apply this to ourselves?

What are some questions that you could ask yourself… your friends… your co-workers… to help yourself and them to look forward to something?

Here are some simple but powerful examples.

LOOKING FORWARD QUESTIONS:

  • Describe something I would love to accomplish in my professional life.
  • Describe a few places I would like to visit in the world.
  • Tell me about a few things you would like to experience with your family.
  • Describe something you would love to do with your friends.
  • Describe something you are excited about when you think about accomplishing _________.

Here’s the cool thing.  Just by giving yourself (and others) the chance to think about these things… you are releasing endorphins.  How cool is that?

But, we don’t want to just stop there… right?

Granted… that release is good for you because it will help you to feel good. But that release of endorphins is also going to help you to be more creative… and we want to harness that.

So take the next step while the iron is hot.

Use that burst of endorphins to get creative about taking action!

ACTION QUESTIONS:

  • What might be a few things a person would need to do in order to achieve _______?
  • What might I need to do in order to travel to _________ in the next 2 years?
  • What might be some small but significant shifts I would want or need to make to begin to experience ______ with my family on a regular basis?
  • What is something specific you want to do today to move towards accomplishing ________?

And since getting things on the calendar is an important part of looking forward, here are some questions to help.

SCHEDULING QUESTIONS:

  • When do I want to make time to do one of those things in the next week?
  • What would it feel like to go ahead and put that trip on my calendar for 2 years out?
  • When do I want to make time for that small but significant shift this next week?
  • When do I want to do ________ today?

So… you can use these questions to release a burst of endorphins… and then you can use that burst of the body’s own “good stuff” and harness a higher level of creativity as you make plans and take action!
