The Intellectual Immune System

Mitch Matthews and THE INTELLECTUAL IMMUNE SYSTEM

On Friday… I have the honor of speaking at the TEDx event in Iowa City.

If you’re not familiar with TED… you need to be.  Basically, TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conferences are designed for the express purpose of sharing of big ideas.

So yeah, I’m excited and honored to be a part of this.

What am I going to be speaking on?

Well… I’ve got 9 minutes to talk about a phenomenon that I’ve seen occur over the years I’ve spent training… speaking and coaching.  More accurately… it’s also something I’ve experienced personally… when I’ve been on the receiving end of great ideas that I wanted to implement… but didn’t.

The phenomenon is what I call the “Intellectual Immune System.”

Fancy phrase.  Simple concept.

Here it is… I believe that our intellect has a immune system… much like our body’s immune system.  Now, it doesn’t work the same way… bio-medically, but it does work the same way metaphorically.

The short version of the story is that our body’s immune system is designed to attack things that come from outside it.  That’s good when we’re talking about flu bugs and viruses.  That’s bad when we’re talking about much-needed valve or organ transplant.  Right?

Well… I believe our intellect has a similar system that rejects ideas that come from outside of us.  That’s good when we are teens and one of our friends comes up with one of those crazy ideas… but it’s bad when our intellectual immune system rejects concepts… strategies… or solutions that we need.

Don’t take my word for it.  Test this idea with me.

Have you… in the last few years… read a book on 5 principles or 9 habits… and you thought…

“WOW! This is exactly what I needed! I’m so doing this!”

Or maybe you listened to a speaker and wondered if they had a video camera in your house because they seemed to know your world so well.  Then… when they rolled out their suggestions or solutions… you said to yourself…

“This is the answer I’ve been looking for! I’m so implementing this!”

But then… whether it was 2 days or 2 weeks later… you couldn’t remember what the 2nd, 3rd and 4th principles were… OR… you couldn’t remember exactly what that speaker had suggested after all.

Sound familiar?

Have you experienced this?

I bet you have.  I sure know I have.

Well… that was your Intellectual Immune System kicking in.  Rejecting those ideas because they came from outside you.

BUT… the good news is… there is a solution.Intellectual Immune System as told by Mitch Matthews

And it’s pretty simple actually.

And I’m going to share it on Friday.

So come to TEDx on Friday.

Or… tune back in here on Monday and I’ll give you the quick skinny on a solution that can allow you to beat your Intellectual Immune System… and help others to do it too!

Sound good?

See you on Friday,

Mitch

This is what dreaming big and achieving more can sound like!

A lot more people are thinking about their big dreams… and wanting to dig into what they are.

As a result… I’ve had a lot more questions about my one-on-one coaching lately.

Mitch Matthews - Dream big and achieve more

Click here to download a transcript

Specifically, peeps are they are wondering what a coaching conversation is like.

Now… I’ll tell you that I produce an mp3 of each coaching call I do.  That allows me to send it to my coaching “ally” (my word for client) after each coaching session… so they can review the conversation as many times as they’d like to.

I’d LOVE to feature one of those so you could hear the freakishly cool excitement in someones voice when they discover something… or get clear on a goal… or start to develop a compelling plan!

But… I keep all of my coaching conversations confidential, so I can’t do that.

BUT… I did put together a short transcript to give you a taste of what dreaming BIG and achieve more sounds like.

You can download it and check out some of the questions that I ask by clicking here: Transcript of a Coaching Call with Mitch Matthews

And hey… if you’d like experience this yourself… I do offer complimentary coaching sessions.

These sessions help people to truly experience our approach to coaching… first hand.

If you’d like to schedule a call… just email us at contactus@mitchmatthews.com and our team will set it up.

Thanks and keep dreaming BIG,

Mitch Matthews

Dream BIG-Achieve More: What to do when someone says no.

By now, you know that I love to ask questions that help people to dream bigger and achieve more.

Recently, I was talking with a sales person who had some big dreams that she wanted to go after, but in order to do that… she had to achieve more in her sales position.  She also explained that she was great at making connections with people but she had trouble gaining commitment on the spot. She felt really good about her product and had no trouble being enthusiastic about it, but she was starting to feel stuck.

So I told her a little story and asked her a few questions that really seemed to help.

Here’s the story… and here are the questions…

Are you thinking about taking a leap of faith?

In written memories ...

The other day, Melissa and I were getting ready for a road trip.

I knew that we were going to be talking and dreaming out loud as we were driving… so I wanted to bring one of my big journals with me.

The funny thing was… I wound up grabbing one of my old journals… kind of by mistake.  But we were in a hurry so I didn’t notice.  I just grabbed it and jammed it in my bag.

I didn’t realize what I’d done until I pulled the journal back out of my bag while we were on the interstate. (Melissa was driving at the time… just in case you were worried!)

I’ve got to tell you that it was a bit like pulling out a dusty old family photo album because I started to go back over some of the entries… which were from 8 to 10 years ago!

Some made me laugh. Some made me shake my head and wonder why I’d ever worried.  Some made me pause.

But then I found a series of entries that made my heart race!

They were from October of 2003.

Each entry had to do with my decision to leave the “safety” of my job to fully launch our business.

As you can imagine, it was amazing to look over my thought process and my prayers… some 8 + years later.

From this vantage point… it was fun to read through my posts on the things that excited me and the things that scared me to my very core.

I remembered my job within the pharmaceutical industry.  I remembered how… in the beginning… it had been a great fit for me… and taught me a lot.  I’d even excelled at it.

But I also began to recall how in those last few years… I started to feel called in a new direction… and specifically… I’d felt drawn to a new adventure of entrepreneurship.

But I wrestled with this decision… right there on the pages of that old journal.

See… this idea was something new.  Nobody in my family had ever been an entrepreneur.  Nobody had done that.  Plus, I had to admit that there were days when I REALLY liked the idea of company benefits and a company car.  I liked the “relative” safety of a big company and a consistent paycheck.  Yeah… it all felt “safe.”

But as I looked over those posts… I was also reminded that that “safety” was slowly killing me.

Not because it was a bad job.

It was killing me because I felt called in this new direction… and every day that I didn’t take a step towards that new path… a little part of me seemed to be dry up.

Now, you may have never wrestled with something like this… but I’m betting you have.

Yours  may not have been leaving a job to start a small company… but I bet it involved change.  I bet you’re wrestling match involved leaving something that felt wrong… but “safe” for something better… but riskier.

Or… maybe… you’re up against a decision like that RIGHT NOW.

Maybe you’re deciding to take a leap of faith… but that means you also will have to let go of something in the process.

That’s right where I was in October of 2003…

Wanting to “leap” and “cling” all at the same time.

But then some things happened.

Some of the things that we’d done to prepare… lined up with some amazing opportunities.

In a matter of days… we planned a bit more… we prayed a whole lot more… and then…

we jumped!

(NOTICE: I did say “we” because Melissa (my wife) and I were in it together and she was behind me… which was huge and additional confirmation!)

And guess what… it was bumpy to start.

  • My first big meeting with clients for my new business in a downtown Chicago hotel… resulted in a fire.  (Seriously… a huge fire that engulfed the hallway we were in!  The notes in my journal on that were both hilarious and scary!!)
  • Our insurance journey was rough because Melissa was a cancer survivor… and everyone wasn’t overjoyed to take us on.
  • We were in the middle of a remodel of our basement, so my initial office was two old doors on saw horses!

But guess what… we’re still here.  After nine years… we’re still in business!

That’s right!  Over these past 9 years… we’ve had some fun and we’ve made some money.

We’ve been able to connect with some of the coolest people on the planet (like YOU!) and help a few along the way!

It’s been an adventure that I wouldn’t trade for the world!

But here’s the kicker… and it came just a few pages later in my journal.

Just a few weeks after taking our big leap into our new life… I came across an article.  In fact, I wrote about it on 10.22.o3.  In fact… I’ll tell you exactly what I wrote…

I left my “secure” job with _________ about 1 and a half weeks ago and on 10.22.03, they announced that they missed their quartly earnings projections.  So they just announced the lay off of 4,400 people.  God bless those people.  They’ve got to be scared.  Wow. I feel really blessed today!

So there it is.  The thing that looked like “safety” wasn’t.

Why?

Because I was called to something else.  Some thing that seemed risky… but right.

And by the grace of God and some cool flippin’ adventures… we’re still here today.

I’ll tell you it hasn’t always felt “safe,” but it sure has been worth it!

So… what do you need to let go of today?

What do you need to leap towards?

Is it… that you need to leap at a new opportunity at work… either by jumping in with both feet and bringing you’re flippin’ awesome best game to the work?  Maybe you won’t get noticed or get the credit… but it just feels like the thing you’re called to do?

Is it… reaching out to someone that you know you need to connect with… even though that might not feel safe?

Is it… jumping into a new big dream… and yelling “CANNON BALL!!!!” as you do it?

What is it for you?

Most importantly… when you think about sitting down in 10 years to look at the journal notes from this current season in your life… what are you going to want to read?

Do you want to read… “I stayed safe.”

Or… do you want to read… “I TOOK THE LEAP!!!!”

You make the call.

Keep dreaming BIG,

Mitch

Monday morning update!

Last week was the example of how life can be a roller coaster ride.

We started with our spring break where we literally got to see spring break in over Sun Valley lake from the deck of a friend’s beautiful cabin.  It was ice covered when we got there on Saturday but within a few days, the lake’s cold lid had receded to accept visiting Canadian geese and local bald eagles.  It was a wonderfully quiet get away and just what the Matthews clan needed!

However, on Monday night we received tragic news from Melissa’s (my wife) family that her 21-year old cousin had passed away.  As you can imagine, this was a true shock and it broke our hearts.  I’ll share more on this in the days to come, but right now it’s a bit too tender to dive into.  I will say that it was the ultimate reminder that life is precious and we can’t take it for granted.  Yes… more on this later.

This week is a wild week… and I can’t wait!

On Thursday, I’m freakishly excited and honored to share the stage with Dr. Mollie Marti at the Leadership Challenge in Cedar Falls.  It’s an event sponsored by the Cedar Falls Jaycees and we’re going to help folks to be dreaming BIG, achieving more and connecting at ninja-levels.  It should be dangerously fun!

I’m also in the final phase of releasing my new book called Ignitea little book to spark your big dreams.  I’m about out of my flippin’ skin on this.  I’ll be sharing more on this in the coming days, but I just wanted to let you know that we’re close… REALLY close.  By the way, I’ve been wildly blessed to get to work with visual author and friend Jocelyn Wallace to make this book happen.  If you don’t know Jocelyn… you should.  Click here to check out her stuff and experience her unique perspective on living life and achieving more!

On the coaching front…

I’ve got some of the coolest clients right now.  Some are simply working on taking their lives to a new level and some are getting ready to launch businesses that will bless your flippin’ socks off!  Oh and one is experiencing breakthroughs that are having a massive impact on her city!  (I’m just so proud of these folks!  I promise total confidentiality to my clients so I can’t share too much.  But as some of this becomes public, I’ll be letting you know!)

Plus, we just certified another round of freakishly cool elite life coaches, and I get to spend some time with our latest grads this week too!

On the BIG Dream Gathering front…

We may get to announce our next BDG this week!  So stay tuned!

Plus, we have some fun updates from some fellow big dreamers…

Denise Forney posted a big dream a number of years ago about using music to teach and inspire kids.  She’s been making some huge strides in this area and has an event in the Des Moines area that you can check out with your own kiddos.  Just click here to find out more!

Also, big dreamer and friend, Tim Denner, let us know that his band just signed a record deal and are headed out on a 50+ city tour this summer!  The band is Syndrome of Fire and their first single just got released on itunes.  So check ‘em out!

We also heard from other big dreamers in the past week that have signed book deals and who are launching their businesses.  We’ll have more on these updates in the weeks to come!

So, okay… as I write this… I’m excited and wildly grateful all at the same time!

How about you?

How was your spring break?

Plus… what are some of the updates on your big dreams and goals?  Who are you connecting with?

Yup… yup… let us know what’s happening with you!

Have a fantastic week and keep dreaming BIG,

Mitch

A few lessons from almost being scammed!

I had an interesting experience this week… and in hindsight… I realized I learned a few valuable lessons from it.

The short story was that I almost fell prey to a pretty elaborate scam.

It’s a scam that apparently has been targeted at speakers.

It started with an email request.  It was to invite me to speak at a conference in London in two weeks.  The person gave me the specifics for the event… right down to room for the talk and defining the types of people who would be in the audience.  Plus, they let me know how they’d found me and referenced the website of a organization I’d spoken for last year.
