Making Ideas Happen

So my last post on “Eliminating the Bright and Shiny Object” Syndrome is a week late.

Kind of ironic… don’t you think?

We had website “challenges” last Friday and then I headed out of town for a family vaca… so I had to employ our second strategy of grace and just let it go until now.

But I’m back… and I’m bolstered in this effort by a book I took with me on my trip.

It’s called “Making Ideas Happen” by Scott Belsky.

The subtitle for the book is “Overcoming the obstacles between vision and reality.”

Sounds like a sweet sweet deal doesn’t it?

Almost too good to be true.

But don’t worry.  I’m not setting you up for a late night infomercial.

I’m offering up the “Eliminating the Bright and Shiny Object Syndrome” strategy of the day.

What is it?

It’s carrying a $.50 spiral notebook with you… at ALL times.

Why?

A To-Do List for Creatives!

To-do list book.

Okay… so we’re continuing on with our busting through the “bright and shiny object syndrome” and getting ‘er done week!

We’ve talked about starting the day with a plan and giving ourselves some grace when those plans go awry.

Now… let’s talk “to-do” lists.

I’ll admit it.  I’m a to-do list kind of guy.

So much so that when I do something that’s not on my list… there’s a very good chance that I’ll write it down… just so I can check it off.

(Anybody care to admit that they do the same thing?)

Sad? Maybe.

But… it helps me to stay on track during some crazy days!

Now, A LOT of people have talked about the best ways to do a to-do list and there are a whole LOT of great ideas.

So, I’m simply going to submit the way that I do my to-do list… in this season.

Today’s strategy for staying focused might surprise you!

A Swatch Irony viewed from below, in black and...

Well… if you’re following along… you know that I’m wanting to stay super focused this week and get a whole bunch o’ stuff done.

And you also know that I’ve invited anyone needing to get a bunch o’ stuff done this week to join me.

I’ve commited to throwing out a strategy a day for doing this.

Today’s might surprise you.

It’s GRACE.

Yup… grace.

Let me explain.

Yesterday, my strategy for eliminating the “bright and shiny object” syndrome was to plan for tomorrow at 4:30 today. Simple plan.  Straight forward.

Then, I posted it to my friends on twitter and FACEBOOK in order to invite you to join me.  (Hey, I needed the accountability AND it’s always more fun to do these things together.)

What’s ironic is that my very strategy for eliminating “bright and shiny objects” caused a distraction.

How?

Working to limit the bright shiny objects this week! Who’s with me?

I’ll admit it.  I can have a short attention span.

I… like our 3 gold fish… can be distracted by bright shiny objects!

And I will also admit that sometimes those bright and shiny objects can lead to some new ideas and break through solutions.  But sometimes… they can just pull me off track.

But… either way… this week… I NEED TO FOCUS.

Partly because I need to get some specific things done… and partly because I’m going to take some time off at the end of the week to spend time away with my fam.

So… yeah… this week… I need to be ubber intentional!

Who’s with me?

Is STUFF getting in the way of your thinking BIGGER?

The office closet 5

My wife helped me clean out and organize my office this past weekend.

We went way past that “illusion of clean” that I some times shoot for, and got down to some deep-cleaning and organizing.

So, that meant we spent some time cleaning out “that closet.”

You know the one…

  • That get-done-with-a-meeting-and-bring-home-a-three-ring-binder-full-of-information-that-you-paid-for-but-won’t-probably-use-throw-it-in-the-closet-closet
  • That all-sorts-of-different-specialty-paper-from-different-projects-long-forgotten-keep-them-in-the-closet-closet
  • The-fun-trinket-like-items-that-you-get-that-are-fun-but-quickly-loose-their-usefulness-throw-them-in-the-closet-closet

Yeah… you know the one.
